177 – Ibn Shams al-Khilāfah Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Mukhtār al-Afḍalī *
The eminent amir, Glory of the Realm, Abū al-Faḍl Jaʿfar—son of Shams al-Khilāfah Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Mukhtār al-Afḍalī—an Egyptian from Qūṣ, acclaimed as the prince of poets.
He was born in Muḥarram of the year 543 AH.
Sharp-witted, literate, and accomplished, he was a masterful calligrapher. He left a Dīwān, several other works, and composed panegyrics for the leading dignitaries of his age.
Al-Qūṣī and al-Mundhirī transmit material from him in their respective Muʿjams.
It is also said (1) that he was in fact Jaʿfar ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAlī, that he served Sultan Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn as an amir, then his son al-ʿAzīz, afterwards served in Aleppo under al-Ẓāhir, and finally returned to Egypt. He also composed satirical verse against al-ʿĀdil and the Qāḍī al-Fāḍil.
Ibn al-Shaʿʿār later claimed (2) that he died in the year ten, but this is an error. Al-Mundhirī states instead:
He died in Muḥarram (3) of the year 622 AH.
