Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

al-Maʿālī Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Qurashī; ʿAbdān ibn Zurrayn, the instructor; al-Bahja ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṣūrī; Abū al-Qāsim al-Khaḍir ibn ʿAbdān al-Azdī; and Naṣr ibn Aḥmad ibn Muqātil—and he ended up being the last of his peers.

He was also granted written authorization to transmit by: Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Sallāl, ʿAlī ibn al-Ṣabbāgh, Abū Muḥammad Sibṭ al-Khayyāṭ, Abū al-Faḍl al-Armawī, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭarāʾifī, Abū al-Fatḥ al-Karūkhī, and a number of others.

Those who narrated from him include: al-Bahāʾ ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, al-Ḍiyāʾ Muḥammad, al-Sayf ibn al-Majd, al-Zakī al-Barzalī, Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf al-Fāḍilī, al-Shams ibn al-Kamāl, al-Taqī ibn al-Wāsiṭī, his brother Muḥammad, al-ʿIzz ibn al-Farrāʾ, al-ʿIzz ibn al-ʿImād, al-Taqī ibn Muʾmin, al-Khaḍir ibn ʿAbdān—we have confirmed his audition from him—and Abū al-Maʿālī al-Abarqūhī.

ʿUmar ibn al-Ḥājib said: “He was a righteous man, abundant in good works and Qur’an recitation; his tongue was ever moist with remembrance, he loved the students, was noble-spirited, and enjoyed the full use of his senses. Later, the death of his son broke him; he became confined to his home and his hearing weakened somewhat. He lived in al-Mizzah.”

He passed away on the third of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in 623 AH.

His brother Abū (1) Yaʿlā Ḥamzah ibn Abī Luqmah, the jurist, died in Ramadan of 616 AH, while in his eighties. He was the younger brother. Among those who received narrations from him were al-Zakī al-Barzalī and Muḥammad and ʿUmar, the sons of al-Qawwās, whereas he himself transmitted from al-Khaḍir ibn ʿAbdān and others.
