Al-Tirmidhī also recorded it—declaring it fair—and so did al-Nasāʾī.
Zaynab bint Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah narrated, on the authority of Abū Saʿīd, who said: “People complained about ʿAlī, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, rose to address us and said, ‘Do not complain about ʿAlī. By Allah, he is unyielding for the sake of Allah—or in the path of Allah.’” It was transmitted by Saʿd ibn Isḥāq and his cousin Sulaymān ibn Muḥammad, the sons of Kaʿb, from their paternal aunt.
It is also related from ʿAmr ibn Shās al-Aslamī that he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, ‘Whoever harms ʿAlī has harmed me.’”
Fitr ibn Khalīfa narrated from Abū al-Ṭufayl: ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, gathered the people in the square of al-Raḥba and said, “I adjure by Allah every person who heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, speak on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm to stand and testify to what he heard.” Many people rose and bore witness that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took ʿAlī by the hand he said to the people, “Do you acknowledge that I have a greater claim over the believers than they have over themselves?” They replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He then said, “For whomever I am his patron, this ʿAlī is his patron. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and oppose whoever opposes him.” Zayd ibn Arqam then said to me, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say that about him.”
Shuʿbah narrated from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, who said: “I heard Abū al-Ṭufayl relate—from Abū Sarīḥah, or from Zayd ibn Arqam (Shuʿbah was uncertain)—that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘For whomever I am his patron, ʿAlī is his patron.’” Al-Tirmidhī graded it fair but did not declare it authentic, because Shuʿbah transmitted it
