144 – al-Khafīfī ʿAbd al-Muḥsin ibn Abī al-ʿAmīd ibn Khālid *
The imām, exemplar, and proof of the religion, Abū Ṭālib ʿAbd al-Muḥsin ibn Abī al-ʿAmīd ibn Khālid al-Khafīfī, al-Abharī, a Shāfiʿī and Sufi.
He studied jurisprudence in Hamadhān under Abū al-Qāsim ibn Ḥaydar, and produced the Taʿlīqa after al-Fakhr al-Nawqānī.
In Isfahān he heard from Aḥmad ibn Yanal al-Turk and Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī; in Baghdad from Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Shātīl and Naṣr Allāh al-Qazzāz; in Abhar from ʿAbd al-Kāfī al-Khaṭīb; in Hamadhān from ʿAbd al-Razzāq ibn Ismāʿīl al-Qūmsānī and ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn al-Furāwī; in Damascus from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Khirqī; in Egypt from Abū al-Qāsim al-Būṣīrī; on the frontier (al-Thaghr) from al-Qāḍī al-Ḥaḍramī; in Mecca from Maḥmūd ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim al-Qalansī; and in Wāsiṭ from Ibn al-Bāqillānī; and he was very—

See also al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, fols. 44–45 (Aya Sofya 3012); al-Ibar, 5/99–100; al-Mukhtasar al-muhtaj ilayh, fol. 87; al-Subki, Tabaqat, 5/132; Ibn al-Mulqin, al-Aqd al-madhhab, fol. 250; al-Fasi, al-Aqd al-thamin, 5/493–495. The last author quotes Ibn al-Najjar, who dated the death to the eighth of Safar, but then follows al-Mundhiri and Qutb al-Din al-Qashtalani in adopting the date given above, adding: “Qutb al-Din al-Qashtalani stated that he attended the burial in the Sufi cemetery, i.e. al-Mualla.” See also Shadharat al-dhahab, 5/115.
Muhyi al-Din al-Qurashi erred in al-Jawahir al-mudiyya by classifying him as a Hanafi on the authority of al-Dhahabi, mentioning only his first name. Al-Tamimi notes in al-Tabaqat al-sunniyya: “What I found in al-Dhahabi’s al-Ibar, under the events of that year, shows that the said Abd al-Muhsin was not a Hanafi. Al-Dhahabi writes: ‘Hujjat al-Din al-Khafifi, Abu Talib Abd al-Muhsin b. Abi al-Amid al-Abdi, the Shafi‘i Sufi …’ and so on. It seems that ‘al-Khafifi’ was misread by the author of al-Jawahir as ‘al-Hanafi’—and Allah knows best.”
