I have never suffered from eye inflammation or from headache since the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wiped my face and placed his saliva in my eye.
Al-Muṭṭalib ibn Ziyād related—through Layth, from Abū Jaʿfar, from Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh—that on the day of Khaybar ʿAlī carried the gate upon his back until the Muslims climbed over it and captured the stronghold—that is, Khaybar. Afterwards they tried to move it, but forty men could not lift it. This report is given only by Ismāʿīl, the grandson of as-Suddi, from al-Muṭṭalib.
Ibn Isḥāq said in al-Maghāzī: ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Ḥasan told me, from some of his family, from Abū Rāfiʿ, the freedman of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him: We set out with ʿAlī when the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, dispatched him with his banner. As we neared the fortress, its people came out and fought us. A Jew struck him, knocking his shield from his hand, so ʿAlī picked up a door that was by the fortress and used it as a shield. He kept it in his grasp while he fought until Allah granted us victory; then he cast it aside. I saw eight of us straining to turn that door over, yet we could not budge it.
Ghundar reported: ʿAwf narrated to us, from Maymūn Abū ʿAbdullāh, from al-Barāʾ and Zayd ibn Arqam, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to ʿAlī, “You are to me as Aaron was to Moses, except that you are not a prophet.” Maymūn is trustworthy.
Bukayr ibn Mismar narrated—through ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, from his father—who said: Muʿāwiyah ordered Saʿd, “What prevents you from reviling Abū Turāb?” He replied, “Because of three things the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said about him; were I to possess even one of them, it would be dearer to me than a herd of red camels. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say when he left ʿAlī behind on one of his expeditions, and ʿAlī protested, ‘Messenger of Allah, will you leave me with the women and children?’ He said, ‘Are you not…’"
