Maḥmūd al-Khaṭīb al-Rāzī; Abū al-Khayr al-Ṭālqānī; Abū al-Karam ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Hamadhānī; ʿAlī ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Rāzī; Abū Sulaymān Aḥmad ibn Ḥasanwayh; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Khalīl al-Khalīlī; Muḥammad ibn Abī Ṭālib al-Ḍarīr; and the ḥafiẓ Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-ʿAṭṭār—apparently by way of ijāza. By that same license he also transmitted from Abū Zurʿah al-Maqdisī and Abū al-Fatḥ ibn al-Baṭṭī.
Those who heard from him include the ḥafiẓ ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm during the pilgrimage season. He likewise granted ijāzas to Abū al-Thanāʾ Maḥmūd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Ṭāwūsī, to ʿAbd al-Hādī ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm, the preacher of al-Miqyās, and to al-Fakhr ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Sukkari.
He was counted among the scholar-practitioners, renowned for worship, ascetic devotion, spiritual states, and humility; mastery of the Shāfiʿī school was said to have culminated with him.
His writings include: al-Fatḥ al-ʿAzīz, a commentary on al-Wajīz; another, shorter commentary; a painstaking two-volume commentary on the Musnad of al-Shāfiʿī; Forty Transmitted Ḥadīths; Dictations on Thirty Ḥadīths; and Kitāb al-Tadhnīb, supplemental notes to al-Wajīz.
Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ said, “I think I have never seen his like in the Persian lands; he was versatile, of praiseworthy conduct, and fine character.”
Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad al-Isfarāʾīnī al-Ṣaffār stated, “He is our shaykh—Imām of the religion, a sincere champion of the Sunnah, Abū al-Qāsim. He was unrivaled in his age in both uṣūl and furūʿ, the mujtahid of his time, unique in Qurʾān exegesis and in the madhhab. He held regular sessions for tafsīr and ḥadīth audition in Qazwīn’s congregational mosque, authored extensively, and was both ascetic and scrupulous, having heard a vast amount.”
Imām al-Nawawī remarked, “He was among the firmly-established righteous; many manifest karāmāt (miraculous graces) were attributed to him.”
