The life of Abū al-Ḥasanayn ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him:
He is ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ʿAbd Manāf ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf, the Commander of the Believers, known by his kunya Abū al-Ḥasan, of the Qurayshite clan of Hāshim.
His mother was Fāṭima bint Asad ibn Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf al-Hāshimiyya, a paternal cousin of Abū Ṭālib. She was among the Emigrant women and died in Medina during the Prophet’s lifetime.
ʿAmr ibn Murrah narrated, through Abū al-Bakhtarī, from ʿAlī: “I said to my mother, ‘Let me take care of drawing water for Fāṭima, the daughter of Allah’s Messenger, and running her errands, while she will do the grinding and kneading for you.’ ” This indicates that his mother passed away in Medina.
ʿAlī transmitted a large number of reports from the Prophet, and the Qur’an was reviewed with him; he also taught its recitation.
Among those who presented their recitation to him were Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, Abū al-Aswad al-Duʾalī, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā.
Those who related hadith from ʿAlī include Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, his sons al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, Muḥammad, and ʿUmar; his cousin Ibn ʿAbbās; Ibn al-Zubayr; a group of other Companions; Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim; ʿAlqamah ibn Qays; ʿUbaydah al-Salmanī; Masrūq; Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿAṭāridī; and a great many others.
