125 – Ibn Ḥawṭ Allāh, Abū Sulaymān Dāwūd ibn Sulaymān
The imam, upright scholar, muḥaddith, ḥāfiẓ, and judge: Abū Sulaymān Dāwūd ibn Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥawṭ Allāh al-Anṣārī al-Ḥārithī, of Valencia, originally from Unda.
Unda is one of the districts belonging to Valencia.
He was born in 552 AH and later settled in Málaga.
He related ḥadith from his father, his brother Abū Muḥammad, Abū al-Qāsim ibn Ḥubaysh, Abū al-Qāsim ibn Bashkuwāl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥumayd, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zarqūn, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Fakhkhār, ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq ibn Būnah, Abū Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, and many others.
He travelled widely, compiled and preserved reports, and Abū al-Ṭāhir ibn ʿAwf of Alexandria granted him an ijāzah (formal authorisation to transmit).
Al-Abbar (1) said: “His teachers numbered more than two hundred, and transmission predominated in him over critical analysis. He and his brother were the most widely versed transmitters in al-Andalus in their day, while still enjoying eminence and integrity.
He added: ‘Abū Sulaymān was devout and withdrawn, and he assumed the judgeship of al-Jazīrah al-Khaḍrāʾ (Algeciras)…’”
