Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah ibn Miqdām ibn Naṣr al-Maqdisī, originally from Jammāʿīl, later of Damascus, resident in al-Ṣāliḥiyyah, a Ḥanbalī, and the author of al-Mughnī.
Birth: He was born in Jammāʿīl, a village belonging to the district of Nablus, in Shaʿbān 541 AH.
He emigrated with his household and relatives when he was ten years old. He memorised the Quran, devoted himself to study from early childhood, and wrote an elegant hand. He was an ocean of learning and one of the keenest minds of his time.
Together with his cousin, the ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī, he set out at the beginning of 561 AH to Baghdad in search of knowledge. They arrived roughly forty days after the funeral of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir, lodged in his madrasa, studied under him during those days, and received hadith from him as well as from: Hibat Allah ibn al-Ḥasan al-Daqqāq; Abū al-Fatḥ ibn al-Baṭṭī; Abū Zurʿah ibn Ṭāhir; Aḥmad ibn al-Muqarrab; ʿAlī ibn Tāj al-Qurrāʾ; Maʿmar ibn al-Fākhir; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Raḥbī; Ḥaydarah ibn ʿUmar al-ʿAlawī; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Bārizī; Khadījah al-Nahrāwāniyyah; Nafīsah al-Bazzāzah; Shuhdah al-Kātibah; al-Mubārak ibn Muḥammad al-Badrāʾī; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Sakan; Abū Shujāʿ Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Mādarāʾī; Abū Ḥanīfah Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Khaṭībī; and Yaḥyā ibn Thābit.
He recited in the reading of Nāfiʿ to Abū al-Ḥasan al-Baṭāʾiḥī and in the reading of Abū ʿAmr to his teacher Abū al-Fatḥ ibn al-Munī.
In Damascus he heard hadith from Abū al-Makārim ibn Hilāl and others.
In Mosul he heard from its khaṭīb, Abū al-Faḍl al-Ṭūsī.
In Mecca he heard from al-Mubārak ibn al-Ṭabbākh. He left a written register of his shaykhs that we have examined.
