Al-Abbār (1) said: “He wrote from both the senior and the junior scholars, devoting his long life to collecting narrations. He had an encyclopedic memory of transmitters and a deep knowledge of their histories. He compiled a History of the Scholars of Ilbīrah, a book titled Kitāb al-Ansāb (2) (Genealogies), and a collection of Forty Ḥadīths in which he achieved the highest level of meticulousness. Witnesses attested to his mastery of the names of narrators, in which he surpassed those who came before him. He also produced critical addenda to the work of Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr.”
