106 – al-Wāsiṭī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-ʿIzz *
A venerable shaykh and Qur’an-reciter, Abū al-Faraj Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-ʿIzz al-Wāsiṭī, known as al-Saffār (the itinerant), was exceptionally long-lived. His age would have allowed him to hear ḥadith from Ibn al-Ḥuṣayn and Fāṭimah al-Jawzdanīyah, yet—already elderly—he actually studied under Abū al-Waqt, Abū Jaʿfar al-ʿAbbāsī, and Abū al-Muẓaffar Ibn al-Turaykī. He transmitted traditions during his journeys to Damascus, Aleppo, Mosul, Irbil, and Baghdad. He showed a measure of scholarly diligence, and his certificates of audition are well known.
Those who narrated from him include Ibn al-Dubaythī, Ibn Khalīl, al-Barzalī, al-Qūṣī, and ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Zayn al-Umanāʾ. He also taught Sahih al-Bukhari in Mosul.
He died in Jumada al-Akhirah, 618 AH, at the age of one hundred and one.
107 – Qatādah ibn Idrīs al-Ḥasanī
