Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ʿAbd al-Dāʾim, Ibn Abī ʿUmar, Fakhr ʿAlī, Ibn al-Kamāl, Taqī Ibn al-Wāsiṭī, ʿImād ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ, ʿIzz Ibn al-ʿImād, Ismāʿīl Ibn al-Farrāʾ, and a host of others.

I read the notice of his death in al-Ḍiyāʾ’s own handwriting: on the twenty-ninth of Ṣafar in the year 618 AH.

– The lord of Alamūt, Ilkiyā (1) Jalāl al-Dīn Ḥasan the Ismāʿīlī,

son of the emir (2) Ibn Ilkiyā Ḥasan ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, the Ismāʿīlī, head of the Ismāʿīliyyah.

He died in 618 AH, having reached old age.

He had re-established the outward symbols of Islam—prayer and fasting (3). After him, his son Shams al-Shumūs ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan took charge, and his days endured until Hülegü captured him and demolished Alamūt.

(*) Notices of him are scattered throughout the general chronicles of his period, especially in Ibn al-Athir’s al-Kamil, al-Sibt’s Mirat, the histories of al-Dhahabi, and others. His biography is found in: Ibn al-Athir, al-Kamil, 12:167; Abu al-Fida, Mukhtasar, 3:137; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, folio 244 (Paris MS 1582); al-Safadi, al-Wafi bi-l-wafayat, vol. 11, folio 54; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya wa-l-nihaya, 13:96; and al-Dhahabi, Shadharat al-dhahab, 5:84. Al-Mundhiri likewise records him at the end of the obituaries for the year 618 in his Takmila, 3, entry 1859. (1) al-Kiya is a Persian word meaning “leader” or “chief.” (2) The manuscript contains a blank at this point; it appears that al-Dhahabi left it because he did not know this Hasan’s father’s name, nor have the sources I consulted supplied it. They only state that he was a grandson of Hasan ibn al-Sabbah (d. 518). (3) The event took place under the Abbasid caliph al-Nasir li-Din Allah, apparently for purely political reasons. For this, al-Dhahabi repeatedly calls him “Dhalal al-Din” (Misguidance of the Religion) instead of “Jalal al-Din.” Further details will be given in the caliph al-Nasir’s entry in this book.
