Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ʿUmar ibn al-Hājib said, “He was an agreeable, witty man. His circumstances deteriorated, and toward the end of his life illness overwhelmed him until he died on the night of Friday, the first of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, 618 AH. He was the last of his father’s children to depart this world. People saddled him with charges of misconduct unbefitting the likes of him.” Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barzalī told me, “He had a playful sense of humor.”

I myself received, through his transmission, the Selected Narrations from the parts of al-Mukhaḍḍaṣ, the second fascicle of the Ḥadith of Zughbah, selections from the Musnad of ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, and the fascicle of Abū al-Jahm.

100 – Ibn Ṭāwūs, Abū Muḥammad Hibat-Allāh ibn al-Khiḍr al-Baghdādī *

The shaykh, long-lived, trustworthy transmitter, Sadīd al-Dīn, Abū Muḥammad Hibat-Allāh ibn Abī Ṭālib al-Khiḍr ibn Hibat-Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭāwūs, originally from Baghdad, later of Damascus.

He came from a household devoted to learning and transmission.

Born in 537 AH, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal.

At the age of five he heard (hadith) from the jurist Naṣr Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Maṣṣīṣī.

He later heard from Naṣir ibn Muḥammad al-Qurashī, al-Khiḍr ibn ʿAbdān, ʿAlī ibn Sulaymān al-Murādī, Naṣr ibn Aḥmad ibn Muqātil, Abū al-Qāsim ibn al-Bunn, and Abū Ṭāhir al-Silafī, to whom he journeyed.

He was stringent in narration, never relating except from his own written copies. He recited the Qur’an abundantly, yet he had no grasp of the discipline of hadith.
