Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ibn Qilij Arslan the Seljuq, a Turkmen of the Qutulmishid line, lord of Konya, Aksaray, and Malatya.

He was the brother of Sultan Kayqubād.

Sibt al-Jawzi (1) said: “He was a tyrant, a prodigal shedder of blood. Al-Malik al-Ashraf broke his power when he advanced to seize Aleppo after the death of al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Ghāzī. Suspecting that his emirs had not fought sincerely—and so it proved—he boiled some of them alive in cauldrons and burned others. God then struck him down suddenly while he was drunk. It is also said that he was afflicted with a wasting disease and his body fell apart. His brother Kayqubād was at that time his prisoner; they released him and placed him on the throne in Shawwāl of the year 615 AH. Some maintained that he was the one who encouraged the Franks to set their sights on Damietta.”

Ibn Wāṣil (2) said: “When Kaykāwūs set out for Aleppo, he was advised to enlist the help of al-Afḍal, lord of Sumaysāt, on the grounds that al-Afḍal would have the khuṭba proclaimed in his name. He therefore summoned him; al-Afḍal came, and Kaykāwūs honored him. The two agreed that whatever portion of Aleppo they conquered would belong to al-Afḍal; thereafter they would march against Ḥarrān, Edessa, and other towns, which would be allotted to Kaykāwūs. They swore an alliance on these terms. Their first conquest was the fortress of Raʿbān, which al-Afḍal received. Next they besieged Tall Bashir and captured it, but Kaykāwūs did not hand it over to al-Afḍal. Al-Afḍal therefore withdrew and no longer trusted him. Al-Ashraf meanwhile came to the aid of the people of Aleppo with the Bedouin of the Ṭayyʾ tribe, while Kaykāwūs corresponded with the emirs of Aleppo and won them over; Mānʿ joined al-Ashraf with the Bedouin of Syria.

I say: this Mānʿ was the paternal great-grandfather of Muhannā ibn ʿĪsā ibn Muhannā ibn Mānʿ.

Kaykāwūs then seized Manbij, whereupon the Bedouin attacked the vanguard of his army and routed it.
