Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah, from Anas, who said: “I and an orphan who was in our care prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while Umm Sulaym stood behind us.” (1)
52 – Ibn al-Ball, Abū al-Muẓaffar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Naṣr al-Dūrī
The imam and great preacher, Abū al-Muẓaffar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Naṣr ibn al-Ball al-Dūrī.
He was born at al-Dūr in the Dujayl district. He later came to Baghdad, applied himself to study, and mastered a variety of disciplines.
He heard hadith from ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Harawī at al-Dūr in the year 531 AH, and also from Ibn al-Ṭalāyah, Saʿīd ibn al-Bannāʾ, Ibn Nāṣir, and several others.
Ibn al-Najjār narrated from him, saying: “He became the shaykh of the preachers; people flocked to him in great numbers. He delivered sermons at the grave of Maʿrūf. There were rivalries between him and Ibn al-Jawzī, each of them having partisans and followers. Al-Dūrī remained in that condition until his son became embroiled in a dispute with a servant of Umm al-Nāṣir. Something serious then occurred on the shaykh’s part, whereupon he was banned from preaching and ordered to remain confined to his home.”
