He passed away in Harran on the second day of Jumada I in the year 612 AH, at the age of seventy-six.
In that same year there also died: the Shaykh of Upper Egypt, the exemplary imam, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Ḥumayd ibn al-Ṣabbāgh; the musnad of Iraq, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Maʿālī ibn Manīnā; Shaykh Kamāl al-Dīn Abū al-Futūḥ Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Jalājilī al-Saffār; the musnad of Mecca, Yaḥyā ibn Yāqūt al-Farrāsh; and, among the musnadun of Baghdad, Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā ibn al-Dabīqī al-Bazzāz, Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Sabbāk al-Ṣūfī, Abū al-Faḍl ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh al-Manṣūrī, Abū al-Qāsim Mūsā ibn Saʿīd ibn al-Ṣayqal al-Hāshimī, and Abū al-Faḍl Sulaymān ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Mawṣilī—may Allah have mercy on them all.
Yahyā ibn Abī Manṣūr the jurist informed us in his book: the ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Qādir ibn ʿAbd Allāh informed us; Masʿūd ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭayyān and Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Simsār informed us, saying:
Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tājir informed us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl the judge narrated to us; Ibn Abī Madhʿūr narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us; Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated from Jābir, who said:
“I came to Abū Bakr asking him, and he refused me. I came again asking, and again he refused. So I said, ‘Either you are being stingy, or you will give me.’
He replied, ‘You accuse me of miserliness? What ailment is more debilitating than stinginess? Never have you come to me except that I intended to give you one thousand.’
So he gave me a thousand, and another thousand, and yet another thousand.”
Its isnād (chain of transmission) is sound.
I read before ʿAlī ibn Abī Bakr al-Buḥturī and Ismāʿīl ibn Rikkāb, the schoolmaster:
