47 – Abū Turāb Yaḥyā ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Turāb al-Karkhī *
The jurist Abū Turāb Yaḥyā ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Turāb al-Karkhī, known as al-Lawzī (1), a Shafiʽi with Rāfiḍī inclinations.
He was born in 526 AH.
He studied law under Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn al-Khall.
He heard hadith from al-Urmawī, al-Karūkhī, Abū al-Waqt, and others.
He taught in Damascus and Baghdad.
Among those who reported from him were Ibn al-Dubaythī, Ibn al-Khalīl, and al-Qūṣī. Al-Qūṣī said: “The mufti Qiwām al-Dīn Yaḥyā, instructor of al-ʿImād the scribe, narrated to us; Ibn al-Zāghūnī narrated to us…,” after which he mentioned a hadith.
Ibn Nuqtah (2) said: “I visited him in 607 AH and found him unbalanced; he claimed that angels were descending upon him in green garments, and he rambled on at length. One of our colleagues told me that whenever he became irritated while al-Tirmidhī’s collection was being read to him, he would revile the readers with obscene language.”
Ibn Hilālah told me: “I entered upon Abū Turāb, and he said, ‘From where…'”
