Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

From the poetry of Tāj al-Kindī:

Let the astrologer stumble on in his delusion
whenever he claims to know the courses of the sky;
God alone is distinguished by primordial knowledge—
no human being shares it with Him, nor any angel.
To win his livelihood he has set, from his very snares, a snare;
wretched indeed are the twin provisions: polytheism and the trap.

He also said:

I see people longing for a lengthy life,
yet in that length lie weary humiliation and the soul’s undoing.
In the season of youth I wished
to be granted long years—though lifespans are, without doubt, allotted provisions.
But when what I had wished for finally arrived,
the portion of life I had once loved and yearned for displeased me.
Whenever I sit alone it seems to me
that I am borne upon shoulders and the funeral train is hastening on.
The passing breeze, gentle in its touch, reminds me
of trenches covered over with layers of earth.
And here I am in my ninety-first year,
its thunder and lightning filling me with dread.
They say, “An antidote would benefit someone like you,”
but for me there is no antidote except Allah’s mercy.

And among his verse:

I have worn the cloak of ninety years of life,
yet I remain passionately hopeful for increase.
Now the ninety-first has come upon them,
and my soul aspires to five and six more.
Nor would it be strange were I to reach a full hundred (1) unscathed—
a person may well attain what he expects.
In my time I knew men
who attained that age and enjoyed their hopes within it.
No intelligent man before me ever disdained a long life,
nor did anyone possessed of reason reproach him for it.

Al-Anmāṭī said: “Al-Kindī passed away on Monday, the 6th of Shawwāl, 613 AH, and the Chief Judge Jamāl al-Dīn Ibn al-Harastānī led the funeral prayer over him, then…"
