- Ibn Manīnā, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Maʿālī al-Baghdādī
The pious, the virtuous, and the senior hadith authority of Iraq—Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Maʿālī (1) ibn Ghanīmah ibn al-Ḥasan al-Baghdādī, al-Ushnānī.
Born: 525 AH.
He learned from al-Qāḍī Abū Bakr (2)—indeed, he was the last person in Baghdad to hear hadith from him before the shaykh’s death—and from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Anmāṭī, Abū Muḥammad Sibṭ al-Khayyāṭ, Abū al-Badr al-Karkhī, and a number of others.
Al-Dubaythī transmitted from him and said (3), “He was a man of virtue, and his audition was sound.”
I add: his transmitters also include al-Barzalī, al-Ḍiyāʾ, Ibn al-Najjār, al-Jamāl Yaḥyā ibn al-Ṣayrafī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Nann (4), and several others.
Through formal authorization (ijāzah), al-Kamāl al-Fuwayri and a group of scholars likewise reported from him.
He died on the twenty-eighth of Dhu al-Ḥijjah, 612 AH, having reached nearly ninety years of age.
