are these?’ They replied, ‘The angels of heaven have descended for the passing of the Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī.’ I asked, ‘And where is he?’ They said, ‘Sit by the congregational mosque until the King’s attendant comes out; then go with him.’ He continued, ‘So I found him standing at the mosque.’
I heard the jurist Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Ghanī, in the year 612 AH, say:
‘I saw your brother al-Kamāl ʿAbd al-Raḥīm—who had died that very year—in a dream. I said, “O so-and-so, where are you?” He answered, “In the Garden of Eden.” I then asked, “Which of the two is more excellent, the Ḥāfiẓ or Shaykh Abū ʿUmar?” He replied, “I do not know. As for the Ḥāfiẓ, every Thursday night a chair is set up for him beneath the Throne; hadith is recited to him, and pearls and jewels are showered upon him. That is my share of it,” and there was something in his sleeve.’
I heard Shaykh ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Kurdī in Ḥarrān say:
‘During Ramaḍān I completed thirty full readings of the Qur’an, dedicating the reward of ten of them to the Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī. I asked myself whether that reward would reach him. Then I saw in a dream as though three platters of fresh dates were before me; the Ḥāfiẓ came and took one of them.
On another occasion I saw him and asked, “Have you not died?” He replied, “Allah has left me my daily portion of prayer,” or words to that effect.’
I heard the qadi, the imam ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-Hakkārī in Nablus say:
‘I saw the Ḥāfiẓ as though he had come to Jerusalem. I said, “You have arrived on foot—may Allah requite those from whom you have come as they deserve!” He answered, “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, carried me.”’
