al-Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī.” At that they all declared, “We testify by Allah that you are among the people of the right hand,” repeating it twice—indeed, three times.
I heard al-Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī say: “I saw the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in a dream while I was walking behind him, but there was a man between us.”
I heard al-Raḍī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad say: “It was as though someone announced, ‘The Ḥāfiẓ has returned from Egypt.’ I set off with Shaykh Abū ʿAmr al-ʿIzz, the Ḥāfiẓ’s son, to meet him. We reached a house; the door was opened, and there stood the Ḥāfiẓ with a pillar of light rising from his face to the heavens, and his mother was in that house.”
I heard the upright Shaykh Ghushaym ibn Nāṣir al-Miṣrī relate:
“When the Ḥāfiẓ died I was in Mecca. After I returned I asked, ‘Where was he buried?’ They replied, ‘To the east of al-Shāfiʿī’s grave.’ I went out and met a man, so I asked him, ‘Where is the grave of ʿAbd al-Ghanī?’ He said, ‘Do not ask me about him; I am not of his school, nor do I like him.’
I left him and continued on until I reached the Ḥāfiẓ’s grave, and I kept visiting it. One day, while I was on the road, that same man met me again. He greeted me and said, ‘Do you not recognise me? I am the one you met earlier and who said such-and-such to you. That very night I saw someone saying to me, “So-and-so”—and he mentioned my name—“asks you: Where is the grave of ʿAbd al-Ghanī?” and you answer as you did?!’ He repeated the statement to me and added, ‘If Allah intends good for you, you will follow what he followed.’ Then he said, ‘If I knew where you lived, I would have come to you.’”
I heard Abū Mūsā, the Ḥāfiẓ’s son, relate to me—this came from the royal attendant Hibat Allāh ibn Ḥaydarah—:
“When I went out for the funeral prayer over the Ḥāfiẓ, a certain Maghribī (1) met me and said, ‘I am a stranger; last night I saw myself in a land where people were dressed in white garments, so I asked, “What…’”
