Abu Musa, the son of al-Hafiz, related to me—through Abu Muhammad, the brother of al-Yasamini—saying:
“One day I was sitting with your father. Silently I wished, ‘If only the Hafiz would give me his cloak so that I might be shrouded in it when I die.’ As I rose to leave, he took off the garment that touched his skin and handed it to me. The cloak has remained with us ever since; whenever someone falls ill, we drape it over him and he recovers.”
I heard al-Radi ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Maqdisi (1) say: “I was with the Hafiz in Cairo when a man entered, greeted us, and placed two dinars before him. The Hafiz immediately passed them to me, saying, ‘My heart feels no ease in keeping these.’ I asked the man, ‘What is your line of work?’ He replied, ‘I am the clerk in charge of natron (2)—that is, I am financially liable for it.’ ”
Fadaʾil b. Muhammad b. ʿAli b. Surur of Jammaʿil told me, narrating from my cousin Badran b. Abi Bakr, who said:
“I was with the Hafiz—in the house that Yusuf al-Musajjaf had endowed for him—and the water supply had been cut off. During the night he rose and said, ‘Fill the ewer for me.’ After relieving himself, he returned and stood waiting, adding, ‘I am only eager to perform ablution for the sake of the barakah (blessing).’ He waited a short while, and suddenly the water began to flow. He remained until the basin overflowed, then the water stopped again, whereupon he performed his ablution. I said, ‘This is a miraculous favor granted to you!’ He replied, ‘Say: I seek Allah’s forgiveness. Perhaps the water was merely blocked—do not say such a thing!’ ”
And I heard al-Radi ʿAbd al-Rahman say: “A man had given the Hafiz a buffalo in al-Bahrah (3). He said to me, ‘Go and bring it…’
