al-Qāsim, stating that ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Muḥammad related to them, in 517 AH (1), in person:
“Abū Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ informed us at the end of 429 AH, saying: Abū ʿAlī al-Ṣawwāf informed us; Isḥāq al-Ḥarbī narrated to us; ʿAffān related to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī, from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb, who said:
‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd (2) was invited to a meal. When he arrived and saw that the house had been draped with decorated cloth, he sat outside, wept, and said:
“The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: ‘The world has come upon you three times,’ meaning: it has advanced toward you.”
He then added: “Will you be better off now, or when a dish is set before you in the morning and another in the evening; when one of you goes out in one suit and returns in another; and when you curtain your houses just as the Kaʿbah is curtained?”
ʿAbd Allāh concluded, “Should I not weep, when I have seen you curtaining your houses exactly as the Kaʿbah is curtained!”’”
Al-Nasāʾī recorded this in al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah through the chain of Hilāl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, from ʿAffān.
