The mufti, Sharaf al-Dīn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, son of the Shāfiʿī authority, Jamāl al-Islām Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn al-Musallam al-Sulamī—the Damascene Shāfiʿī and professor at the Aminiyyah. He was born in the year 544 AH (1).
He heard hadith from Abū al-ʿAshāʾir al-Kurdī (2), Ḥamzah ibn al-Ḥubūbī, his maternal uncle Ṣāʾin ibn ʿAsākir (3), and, while in Baghdad, from Shuhda.
He narrated in Egypt and Baghdad, excelled in debate, and was clear-spoken and eloquent.
Among those who transmitted from him are al-Ḍiyāʾ, Ibn Khalīl, and al-Qūṣī.

(1) “and five hundred”: this is the date given by Ibn al-Dubaythi and al-Mundhiri, followed by al-Dhahabi. Al-Muhibb Ibn al-Najjar, however, writes: “I have been informed that our shaykh, the jurist Abu al-Hasan, was born in Muharram 542/1147-48 in Damascus” (Revised History, fol. 8); al-Subki adopts this in his Tabaqat al-wusta.
