Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Among those who transmitted from him were Ibn Khalīl, al-Ḍiyāʾ, the Preacher of Marda, and a number of others. His father was the agent of the caliph al-Mustarshid Billah.

ʿAlī died in Egypt on the first day of Shaʿbān, 599 AH.

His father (1) was al-Mustarshid’s foster-brother, and the caliph raised him to the highest posts. After the caliph’s death he turned to asceticism, devoted himself to worship, built a Shāfiʿī school, and narrated hadith from Ibn Bayān al-Razzāz. He passed away in 556 AH.

201 – Ibn al-Māristāniyyah, Abū Bakr ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAlī*
The eminent dignitary, accomplished littérateur, and eloquent orator, Abū Bakr ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAlī ibn Naṣr ibn Ḥumrah (2) al-Taymī (3).

(1) In addition to the notice placed under the entry of his son ʿAli, he is also treated by Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Muntazam, 10/202; Ibn al-Athir, al-Kamil, 11/113; Sibt Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Mirat, 8/236; al-Dhahabi in several of his works; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya, 12/245; al-ʿAyni, ʿAqd al-Juman, 16, fol. 343; and others. His honorific was Kamal al-Din; consequently his school was called al-Kamaliyya and stood at Bab al-ʿAmma. (*) Ibn al-Najjar, al-Tarikh al-Mujaddad, fol. 99 of the Zahiriyya manuscript (where he criticises him); al-Munadhiri, al-Takmila, no. 754; Abu Shama, al-Dhayl, 34; Ibn al-Saʿi, al-Jamiʿ, 9/112; Ibn al-Futi, al-Talkhis, 4, no. 2195; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 118 (Paris MS 1582) and al-Mukhtasar al-Muhtaj Ilayh, 2/187; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya, 13/35; Ibn Rajab, al-Dhayl, 1/442; al-Ghassani, al-ʿAsjad, fol. 108; Ibn Hajar, al-Lisan, 4/108; Ibn al-ʿImad, al-Shadharat, 4/339; and the introduction to vol. 1 of Ibn al-Dubaithi’s Dhayl Tarikh Baghdad (Baghdad 1974), 17–19. (2) The base-text reads “Hamza,” but this is a copyist’s slip. Al-Zaki al-Munadhiri, al-Takmila, explains that the correct form is Humrah (with damma on the ha, sukun on the mim, then ra, followed by the feminine ta ʾ). (3) Muhibb al-Din Ibn al-Najjar states in al-Tarikh al-Mujaddad: “This is how he used to recite his lineage, tracing it back to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, but I saw reliable shaykhs among the hadith scholars and others who rejected this genealogy …"
