al-Madīnī told me; Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh al-Ḥimṣī narrated to us; Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamzah narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever, when he hears the call to prayer, says: ‘O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer that is about to be performed, grant Muhammad the means and pre-eminence, and raise him to the praiseworthy station that You have promised him,’ my intercession will be guaranteed for him.” (1)
He also transmitted the report to us through a graduated chain: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (2) ibn Muḥammad informed us; ʿUmar ibn Ṭabarzad informed us; Hibat Allah ibn al-Ḥuṣayn informed us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn al-Haytham al-Baladī narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh related it in the same wording, but added:
“…except that the intercession shall assuredly be granted to him on the Day of Resurrection.”
It appears that my teacher heard it from Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ismāʿīlī, the jurist.
Abū Bakr ibn Ṭarkhān wrote to me: Imām Muwaffaq al-Dīn informed us, saying:
“Ibn al-Jawzī was the leading preacher of his age. He produced fine works in many fields of knowledge and was a man of varied talents. He authored books on fiqh, taught it, and was a ḥadith scholar; yet we are not satisfied with his writings on the Sunnah nor with his methodology in that domain. The common folk nonetheless revered him. From time to time certain statements concerning the Sunnah would slip from him that were deemed objectionable; legal questions would be raised about them, and he would feel distressed on that account.”
