— son of Muhammad, son of Yahya, son of al-Zaki al-Qurashi (1), a Damascene by origin and a follower of the Shafiʿi school. He belonged to a distinguished family and was a man of many disciplines and keen intelligence, proficient in jurisprudence, belles-lettres, preaching, and poetry. The office of judge had been held before him by his father, Zaki al-Din (2); his grandfather, Majd al-Din (3); and his great-grandfather, al-Zaki (4). It was later undertaken by his own two sons, Zaki al-Din al-Tahir (5) and Muḥyi al-Din Yahya ibn Muhammad (6).
…for Muhammad b. Yahya Ibn al-Zaki—the biographee’s grandfather—was also his maternal uncle.
He is treated by al-Mundhiri, al-Takmila, no. 671; Abu Shama, al-Dhayl, p. 31; Ibn Khallikan, Wafayat, 4 / 229; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 114 (Paris MS 1582), al-Ibar, 4 / 305, Duwal al-Islam, 2 / 79; al-Safadi, al-Wafi, 4 / 169; al-Subki, Tabaqat, 6 / 157; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya, 13 / 32; Ibn al-Mulqin, al-‘Iqd, fol. 164; al-‘Ayni, ‘Iqd al-Juman, 17 / fol. 275; Ibn Taghri-Bardi, al-Nujum, 6 / 181; Ibn al-Furat, Tarikh, 8 / fol. 98; Ibn ‘Abd al-Hadi, Mu‘jam al-Shafi‘iyya, fol. 46; al-Nu‘aymi, al-Qudat, p. 52; Ibn al-‘Imad, al-Shadharat, 4 / 337; and al-Qanuji, al-Taj, p. 111.
This learned judge accompanied the valorous Sultan Salah al-Din Yusuf at the recapture of Jerusalem—may God restore it to Islam—in 583 / 1187. He was the first to preach in the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque, delivering a magnificent sermon that opened with the Qurʾanic praises, caused believers’ hearts to tremble, and drew tears of joy for God’s victory. He was then thirty-three years old; hence almost every work dealing with the blessed Salahid period mentions him because of that famous sermon.
(1) Abu Shama questions their claim to belong to Quraysh and to Uthman b. ‘Affan. Summarising his discussion in al-Dhayl (p. 31): the hadith master Ibn ‘Asakir wrote biographies of several family members yet never linked them genealogically to Uthman; had the claim been correct it would hardly have escaped him, nor would he have omitted so great a distinction for his forefathers, mother and uncles. Still, such silence is not a decisive proof against the lineage.
(2) He died in 564, according to Tarikh al-Islam and other sources; he passed away in Baghdad and was buried in the Hanbali cemetery at Bab Harb.
(3) He died in 537 (see also Dr. Bashar’s article on Ibn ‘Asakir in Baghdad).
(4) He died in 534, according to Tarikh al-Islam and others; he was known as Ibn al-Saʾigh.
(5) His name was Ahmad b. Muhammad; he died in 617, according to Tarikh al-Islam and others.
(6) He died in 668, according to Tarikh al-Islam and others. One of his sons likewise held the post of judge: =
