Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I say: Ibn Khalil and al-Diyaʾ recorded the nisba with a qaf, whereas a number of scholars avoided it because of the discrepancy that had arisen over its form (1).

He narrated hadith from several of his forefathers as well as from his own sons.

He died in Safar of the year 598 AH.

He transmitted substantial works both through direct audition (samaʿ) and by formal licence (ijazah).

187 – Ibn al-Zaki, Abu al-Maʿali Muhammad b. ʿAli al-Qurashi *
Chief Judge of Damascus, Muḥyi al-Din, Abu al-Maʿali Muhammad, the son of Judge ʿAli

(1) Al-Dhahabi does not point out this discrepancy in al-Mushtabih (p. 504); he simply writes: “With a fa followed by a sukūn, referring to the trade of selling bed-covers: Abu Tahir Barakat b. Ibrahim al-Khushuʿi al-Farshi, as stated by Ibn al-Anmati and others.” Ibn Hajar, in al-Tabsir (3 / 1165), likewise makes no corrective remark. Ibn Khallikan records the name exactly as his teacher al-Mundhiri does—see the wording already cited—adding: “Al-Anmati, the one who also sells bed-covers… I met his son in Egypt; he used to visit me frequently and granted me a complete ijaza for all that he had heard and received from his father” (Wafayat, 1 / 270). In our view al-Mundhiri knew precisely what he was recording, for we know that al-Khushuʿi gave him an ijaza in Damascus in Safar 595 and a second one in Dhu al-Qaʿda of the same year, and he may well have written this very nisba in his own hand on the document. Yet observe what the Damascene scholar Ibn Nasir al-Din says when commenting on al-Dhahabi’s remark in his Tawdih of al-Mushtabih: “I say: Ibn Khallikan stated that the ascription to Quraysh is a scribal error.” I myself have seen the nisba with a qaf, in the handwriting of the transmitter Abu Tahir al-Khushuʿi: “ʿAli b. Muhammad b. ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Tahir Barakat b. Ibrahim b. Tahir al-Khushuʿi al-Qurashi.” The version with the qaf is the one generally known. Abu l-Fath ʿUmar b. al-Hajib al-Amini, in his Mashyakha, gives an excellent pedigree—which I have also seen in his own hand—reading: “Ibrahim b. Barakat b. Ibrahim b. Tahir b. Barakat b. Ibrahim b. ʿAli b. Muhammad b. Ahmad b. al-ʿAbbas b. Hashim al-Qurashi ibn al-Farshi, known as al-Khushuʿi.” (Vol. 2, fol. 197 of the Zahiriyya copy.) Nothing in the printed Wafayat supports Ibn Khallikan’s alleged statement that al-Qurashi is a corrupted reading. The conclusion is that the man was Qurashi by descent and was also called al-Farshi because he sold bedding; each group kept one nisba and ignored the other—so it seems. (*) The house of al-Zaki was one of Damascus’s prominent families; they were the maternal uncles of the Damascene hadith master and historian Ibn ʿAsakir.
