177 – Ibn Dust ʿAbd al-Latif ibn Abi al-Barakat Ismaʿil al-Baghdadi*
He was the son of the shaykh Abu Saʿd Muhammad ibn Dust, known as Shaykh al-Shuyukh; his kunyah was Abu al-Hasan. He was originally from Nishapur but settled in Baghdad, was affiliated with Sufism, and was the brother of Shaykh al-Shuyukh Sadr al-Din ʿAbd al-Rahim, who died at al-Rahba.
Abu al-Hasan himself was a lay shaykh, slow-witted and devoid of learning.
He heard hadith from al-Qadi Abu Bakr, from Ismaʿil ibn al-Samarqandi, from ʿAli ibn ʿAli al-Amin (1), from Abu al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-Salam, and from a number of others.
After his brother’s death he took charge of his grandfather’s ribat in the year 580 AH. He had performed the pilgrimage, travelled by sea, and visited Egypt, Jerusalem, and Damascus.
He also transmitted hadith. Death overtook him in Damascus on 14 Dhu al-Hijjah 596 AH, at the age of seventy-three.
Ibn al-Najjar recorded this, or something very close to it. Those who narrated from him include: Ibn al-Najjar himself, Ibn Khalil, al-Yaldani, ʿUthman ibn Khatib al-Qarafa, Faraj al-Habashi, ʿAbd Allah and ʿAbd al-Rahman, the two sons of Ahmad ibn Taʿan (2), the judge Sadr al-Din ibn Sani al-Dawla, and Ibn ʿAbd
