His brother al-Ḥuṣayn died four months later; both of them had taken part in the Battle of Badr. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The Banū Hāshim and the Banū al-Muṭṭalib are but one people; they never left our side, whether in the Days of Ignorance or after Islam.”
Year 33 AH:
• During this year the expedition to Cyprus took place—so report Ibn Isḥāq and others—as well as the campaign in Ifrīqiya. Al-Layth relates that the overall commander of the force was ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Sarḥ.
• Khalīfa records that in the same year Qārin mustered a massive army in Bādghīs and Herat, advancing with forty thousand men. Qays ibn al-Haytham abandoned the region and fled, whereupon ʿAbd Allah ibn Khāzim al-Sulamī assumed leadership of the Muslims. He gathered four thousand fighters, engaged Qārin, and—by Allah’s help—defeated him, killing and taking captives. He then wrote to ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿĀmir announcing the victory, and Ibn ʿĀmir appointed him governor of Khurāsān. Ibn ʿĀmir next sent ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Samura to Sijistān; the ruler of Zarang concluded a treaty with him, and Ibn Samura remained there until the siege of ʿUthmān.
• Khalīfa also says that in this year Muʿāwiyah led a raid against Malatya and Ḥiṣn al-Marʾah in Byzantine territory.
• In the same year ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Sarḥ mounted a seaborne attack on Abyssinia, during which Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥudayj lost an eye.
