until he encamped before Nishapur, where he fought its inhabitants for seven months until the city surrendered. ʿUthmān then confirmed him as its governor as well, for he was the caliph’s maternal cousin. It is also said that the Prophet ﷺ spat into his mouth when he was a small child.
In the same year, Khalifa ibn Khayyat relates, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿĀmir entered the state of iḥrām at Nishapur, leaving Qays ibn al-Haytham and others in charge of Khurasan—though some place this event in the previous year.
That year also witnessed the al-Asāwid expedition: ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Sarḥ sailed from Egypt with a naval force and made his way toward the region of Misisah.
Year 32 AH:
During this year the battle of al-Muḍayyiq took place near Constantinople, under the command of Muʿāwiyah.
Those who died in this year include Sinān ibn Abī Sinān ibn Muḥṣin al-Asadī, a confederate of Banū ʿAbd Shams. He was older than his uncle ʿUkkāsha; he and his father both emigrated and fought at Badr. His father died while the Prophet ﷺ was besieging Banū Qurayzah. Sinān was counted among the distinguished Companions, and al-Wāqidī says he was the first to pledge allegiance beneath the Tree.
Al-Ṭufayl ibn al-Ḥārith ibn al-Muṭṭalib is also said—according to one opinion—to have died in this year; he has already been mentioned earlier.
