Ṭalḥah ibn Muḥammad said, “Three figures stand out among the luminaries of the Maghrib in this discipline: Ibn Bashkuwāl, Abū Bakr ibn Khayr, and Ibn ʿUbayd Allah.”
Ibn Sālim remarked, “When the righteous are mentioned, by all means mention Ibn ʿUbayd Allah.”
Ibn Rushayd said, “He combined asceticism and an extraordinary memory with participation in many fields of knowledge—may Allah have mercy on him.”
Ibn Rushayd also related, “It was said that he remained away from the Friday congregational prayer for forty years because of an excuse.” Ibn Rushayd rejected this report, adding, “He did not stay away from Jumuʿah for that entire period.”
