Muharram, on account of a dream he had seen; therefore, each year he would prepare himself for that month. I (1) read Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim with him in six days, together with several other works, whose titles he then listed.
I said: He also recited the seven canonical readings to Yaḥyā ibn al-Khulūf and to Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Bādhish.
Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Shārī recited to him and transmitted extensively from him.
Ibn Fartūn said: “Miraculous signs were manifested through Abū Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh. Our shaykh, the eminent narrator Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Ghāz, related to us—from his cousin, a pious woman who had suffered continuous bleeding for some time—that she said:
‘I was informed of the death of Ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, and it distressed me that I would not be present at his funeral. So I prayed, “O Allah, if he is one of Your friends, then withhold this bleeding from me until I can perform the funeral prayer for him.” The bleeding stopped immediately, and I never saw it again.’ (2)
I said: Among those who transmitted from him were Ibn Ghāzī just mentioned, Abū ʿAmr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAyyshūn, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Yatīm al-Andarashī, Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Yaḥṣabī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṣaffār al-Qurṭubī, Sharaf al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Mursī, Abū al-Khaṭṭāb ibn Dihyah and his brother Abū ʿAmr, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥriz al-Zuhrī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim al-Sarrāj, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn al-Fakhkhār al-Sharīshī, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Faṭrāl, Abū al-Ḥajjāj Yūsuf ibn Muḥammad al-Azdī, and Ibrāhīm ibn ʿĀmir.
