He studied extensively under Imam Ẓahīr al-Dīn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, as well as under Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUthmān al-Ṣaffārī and a number of other scholars. He conducted many dictation sessions (majālis) that I myself witnessed. Among those who transmitted from him was the learned Jamāl al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn Aḥmad al-Ḥaṣīrī, one of his pupils. He remained alive until the year 589 AH, for he was still holding dictation gatherings in that year.
118 – al-Marghīnānī, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Abī Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Jalīl *
The distinguished scholar, authority of Transoxiana, Burhān al-Dīn, Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Abī Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Jalīl al-Marghīnānī, the Ḥanafī jurist, author of the two works al-Hidāya and al-Bidāya in the (Ḥanafī) school of law. At the present moment we have received no fresh reports about him, yet he was one of the great reservoirs of knowledge—may Allah have mercy on him.
