Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

113 – al-Qāḍī al-Fāḍil Maḥmūd ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib al-Tamīmī*
He was the distinguished scholar and spiritual guide, Abū Ṭālib Maḥmūd ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib al-Tamīmī, originally from Isfahan, a Shāfiʿī jurist and a disciple of Muḥyī al-Dīn Muḥammad (1) ibn Yaḥyā al-Shahīd. He authored an exceptionally brilliant gloss on juristic disputes and was astonishing in the way he delivered his lessons. Leading imams completed their training under him. He was a wonder when it came to exhortation and a man of many fields. Ibn Khallikān recorded his death as occurring in Shawwāl, 585 AH.

114 – Ibn Abī Ḥabbah ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Hibat Allāh al-Baghdādī**
The venerable shaykh, Abū Yāsir ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Hibat Allāh ibn Abī Yāsir ʿAbd—

(*) Ibn Khallikan gives him a notice in Wafayat al-ayan 5/174; al-Dhahabi in Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 124 (Ahmad III 2917/14); al-Subki in Tabaqat 7/286; and Ibn al-Imad in al-Shadharat 4/284. The heading “al-qadi al-fadil” is problematic, for it can be confused with the famous littérateur bearing that honorific. None of the above biographers says that our subject was called al-fadil, nor does al-Dhahabi use the title in Tarikh al-Islam. It is most likely a copyist’s lapse; the man seems to have been known simply as “al-qadi.” See also our remark under the entry for al-qadi al-fadil al-Baysani, no. 175. (1) The well-known imam, author of al-Muhit fi sharh al-wasit and other works. He was known as al-shahid (the martyr) because he was killed by the Ghuzz who raided the region during the reign of Sultan Sanjar b. Malikshah; his death occurred in 548/1153 (al-Subki, Tabaqat 7/25). (* *) Ibn Nuqtah mentions him in al-Taqyid, fol. 159; Ibn al-Dubaythi in his Tarikh, fol. 154 (Paris 5922); Ibn al-Najjar in al-Tarikh al-mujaddad, fol. 74 (Zahiriyya MS); al-Munziri in al-Takmila, entry 165; al-Naal in his Mashyakha, p. 110; al-Dhahabi in Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 37 (Paris 1582); al-Ibar 4/266; al-Mushtabih 213; al-Ilam, fol. 211; Ibn al-Imad in al-Shadharat 4/293; and al-Zabidi under the letter ḥ-b in the Taj.
