Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi
  1. Al-Numayrī, Abū al-Murhaf Naṣr ibn Manṣūr ibn Ḥasan

The emir and man of letters, Abū al-Murhaf Naṣr ibn Manṣūr ibn Ḥasan al-Numayrī. His mother was Bannah, daughter of Sālim ibn Mālik, son of the governor of Mosul, Badrān ibn Muqallad al-ʿUqaylī.

He was born in al-Rafiqa sometime after 500 AH (1). He began writing poetry while still in his teens, and a dīwān—his collected verse—has come down to us. Smallpox weakened his eyesight (2).

When discord fractured his tribe and their order fell apart, he left for Baghdad. There he memorized the Quran, studied jurisprudence according to the school of Aḥmad, and learned grammar from Ibn al-Jawālīqī. He also received hadith from Hibat Allah ibn al-Ḥusayn and from a number of other teachers.

(*) He is listed by: Yaqut, Irshad al-arib, 7 / 208; Sibt Ibn al-Jawzi, Mirat al-zaman, 8 / 421; Abu Shama, al-Rawdatayn, 2 / 211; Ibn Khallikan, Wafayat al-aʿyan, 5 / 383; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 144 (Ahmad III 2917/14); al-Mukhtasar al-muhtaj ilayh, 3 / 213; al-Mundhiri, al-Takmila, 1, entry 166; al-Safadi, Nukat al-himyan, p. 300; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya, 12 / 352; Ibn Rajab, al-Dhayl, 1 / 374; al-ʿAyni, ʿAqd al-juman, 17, fol. 158; Ibn Taghribirdi, al-Nujum, 6 / 118; Ibn al-Furat, Tarikh, 8, fol. 41; Ibn al-ʿImad, al-Shadharat, 4 / 295. (1) Ibn Rajab, citing Abu l-Hasan al-Qatiʿi, reports that al-Numayri said: “I was born on Tuesday, the thirteenth of Jumada al-Akhira in the year 501, at al-Rafiqa near Raqqat al-Sham” (al-Dhayl, 1 / 374). Al-Mundhiri gives the same date (al-Takmila, entry 166); consequently, al-Dhahabi’s vague remark “after 500” is unwarranted. (2) At that time he was fourteen years old and his sight was so weak that he could see only objects close to him. He then travelled to Baghdad for treatment, but the physicians despaired of curing him; he went completely blind and remained in the city, as related by Ibn Rajab and others in al-Dhayl.
