a complete khatm (full recitation of the entire Qur’an). Abū Ḥāmid Ibn al-Ṣābūnī wrote to me in his letter (1): “He repeated the lesson at the Amīniyyah for Jamāl al-Islām Abū al-Ḥasan, but later he went blind and became unable to walk. One night he needed water for wuduʾ and no one was with him. He is reported to have said, ‘While I was thinking about what to do, suddenly a light from the sky entered the room and I could see the water, so I performed my ablution.’ He related this to one of his brothers and told him not to mention it until after his death.”
He passed away in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, 587 AH.

(1) Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Mahmud, Jamal al-Din al-Mahmudi, better known as Ibn al-Sabuni (d. 680/1281), is the author of Takmilat Ikmal al-Ikmal, a supplement that he appended to the work of the hadith scholar Ibn Nuqta (d. 629/1231). The text was critically edited and printed by our late teacher, the eminent scholar Dr. Mustafa Jawad.
Al-Dhahabi notes that he received an ijaza (licence to transmit) from this Ibn al-Sabuni; the request was made on his behalf by his foster-brother, Ala al-Din Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ibrahim Ibn al-Attar (654–724/1256–1324), in the very year of al-Dhahabi’s birth, 673/1274. In his major work Mu jam shuyukhihi, al-Dhahabi writes about Ibn al-Sabuni: “Muhammad, son of the imam Alam al-Din Ali ibn Mahmud ibn Ahmad, the imam, the hafiz, the hadith scholar, the students’ shaykh, Jamal al-Din Abu Hamid Ibn al-Sabuni al-Mahmudi al-Shafi i al-Damashqi, shaykh of Dar al-Hadith al-Nuriyya … he compiled an excellent appendix to al-Mukhtalif wa-l-Mu talif … and he granted me licence to transmit his narrations in the year seventy-three.”
The phrase “in his letter to me” seems to refer to Ibn al-Hajib rather than to al-Dhahabi, although Ibn al-Hajib died fifty years earlier; ‘Izz al-Din Abu al-Fath Umar ibn Muhammad Ibn al-Hajib al-Amini al-Dimashqi passed away in 630/1233. The apparent difficulty disappears when we read al-Dhahabi’s own statement in Mu jam shuyukhihi: “The hafiz Umar Ibn al-Hajib heard from him and mentioned him in his Mu jam” (MS 2, fol. 55). In Tarikh al-Islam al-Dhahabi further says of Ibn al-Sabuni: “…He was a companion of Ibn al-Hajib, al-Sayf Ibn al-Majd, Ibn al-Dukhmisi and Ibn al-Jawhari during their quest for knowledge; he lived long and his chains of transmission rose high … Umar Ibn al-Hajib and other earlier scholars heard from him.” (fol. 77, Aya Sofya 3014).
This entire passage occurs in the biography of Ibn al-Khirqi in Takmilat Ikmal al-Ikmal, p. 124.
(2) In Ibn al-Sabuni’s Takmila the wording is: “If I …”.
(*) He was mentioned above in the entries for his father Ildegiz and his brother Muhammad, known as al-Bahlawan; al-Dhahabi also provides a biography of him in =
