In that same year, Shapur was taken; its commander was ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ al-Thaqafī, and he concluded a settlement with its people for three million three hundred thousand (dirhams).
It is also said that ʿUthmān dismissed Saʿd from Kūfa because he owed a debt to Ibn Masʿūd; when the latter demanded payment and the two disputed, ʿUthmān became angry with Saʿd and removed him. Al-Walīd had earlier served ʿUmar as governor over part of al-Jazīra, and he was gentle with his subjects.
Year 27 AH
In this year Muʿāwiya mounted a seaborne campaign against Cyprus, embarking with the armies. Among those with him were ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit and his wife Umm Ḥarām bint Milḥān al-Anṣāriyyah, the maternal aunt of Anas. She fell from her mule and died a martyr—may Allah have mercy on her. The Prophet ﷺ used to visit her, rest in her house, and had given her the glad tidings of martyrdom. Her grave is in Cyprus, and people say, “This is the grave of the righteous woman.”
She narrated hadith from the Prophet ﷺ, and among those who transmitted from her were Anas ibn Mālik, ʿUmayr ibn al-Aswad al-ʿAnsī, Yaʿlā ibn Shaddād ibn Aws, and others.
Dāʾūd ibn Abī Hind said: In the year 27, ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ and Abū Mūsā concluded a treaty with the people of Arjān for two million two hundred thousand, and with the people of Dārābjird for one million eighty thousand.
Khalīfah said: In that same year ʿUthmān removed ʿAmr from Egypt and appointed ʿAbd Allāh in his place.
