“…if we were to reject it, we would be disparaging the very people who transmitted it!”
He had already ordered a grave to be dug for himself near Imam Aḥmad, and he had once come to Damascus as a merchant with funds that belonged to Saʿd al-Khayr (1). While there he related ḥadiths, and Ibn ʿAsākir mentioned him in his History.
Our teacher Ibn Taymiyyah related: It is said that when the Caliph al-Nāṣir heard that ʿAbd al-Mughīth was forbidding people to revile Yazīd, he disguised himself, went to see him, and asked him about it. ʿAbd al-Mughīth feigned ignorance and answered, “My only aim is to stop tongues from cursing the caliphs. Otherwise, were we to open this door, the caliph of our own day would be even more deserving of a curse, for he does such-and-such and such-and-such…,” and he began to enumerate his failings. The caliph replied, “Shaykh, pray for me,” and left.
ʿAbd al-Mughīth died in Muḥarram (2), 583 AH.
