Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd al-Ruwaydashtī (1) said: “Abū Mūsā died on the ninth of Jumādá al-Ūlā in the year 581 AH.”
I add: He was the leading hadith master of the East in his day.
In that same year there also passed away: the hadith master of the West, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Azdī, author of al-Aḥkām; the Andalusian scholar and hadith master, Abū Zayd ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Iṣbagh al-Khathʿamī al-Suhaylī of Málaga, the blind author of al-Rawḍ al-Unuf; the musnid (chief hadith transmitter) of the age, Abū al-Fatḥ ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shātil al-Dabbās of Baghdad; the hadith master of Iṣfahān, Imām Abū Saʿd Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Ṣāʾigh; the musnid of Damascus, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Razzāq ibn Naṣr al-Najjār; Abū al-Majd al-Faḍl ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Banyāsī; the ascetic shaykh of Ḥarrān, Shaykh Ḥayāt ibn Qays al-Ansārī; the Alexandrian jurist, Shaykh Abū al-Ṭāhir Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAwf al-Zuhrī, who died at the age of ninety-six; and the muḥaddith of Mecca, Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Majīd al-Mayyānashī.
Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad (2) ibn ʿAlī ibn Faḍl al-Ḥanbalī narrated to us during my recitation; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Najm the preacher narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Madīnī, the hadith master, narrated to us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād narrated to us; Abū Nuʿaym, the hadith master, narrated to us; Abū Isḥāq ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; ʿAbdān narrated to us—and through the same chain back to Abū Nuʿaym. Al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Razīn al-Khayyāt also narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān narrated to us. They both said:
Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; Ṣadaqah ibn Khālid narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jābir narrated to us; ʿAtiyyah ibn Qays narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghanm al-Ashʿarī, who said:
“Abū ʿĀmir, or Abū …”
