77 – Ibn Mughawir, Abū Bakr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Sulamī *
The Imām, the erudite scholar, the jurist, the accomplished scribe, the eloquent stylist—Abū Bakr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad
(1) Shuayb adds: “and between them lie doubtful matters unknown to many people. Whoever avoids the doubtful protects his religion and his honour; whoever falls into the doubtful will inevitably fall into the unlawful—like a shepherd who grazes at the edge of a royal preserve and is about to trespass. Truly, every king has a preserve, and the preserve of Allah is His prohibitions. Indeed, within the body is a piece of flesh: if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt—verily, it is the heart.” Recorded by al-Bukhari 4/248-249 (Book of Sales, “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear”); Abu Dawud (3229); and al-Nasa’i 7/241-242, all through Ibn Awn, from al-Sha‘bi, from al-Nu‘man b. Bashir. Also recorded by al-Bukhari 1/117-119 (Book of Faith, “The merit of one who safeguards his religion”), Muslim (1599), Abu Dawud (3330), al-Tirmidhi (1205) and Ibn Majah (3984), all through Zakariyya b. Abi Zaydah, from al-Sha‘bi; and by al-Bukhari 4/248 and Muslim (1599) through Abu Furwah al-Hamdani, from al-Sha‘bi.
