  1. Ibn Zarqun—Muhammad ibn Saʿid ibn Ahmad al-Ansari*
The shaykh, jurist, imam, long-lived authority, Qur’an-reciter, and last representative of the early generations: Abu ʿAbd Allah Muhammad, son of Abu al-Tayyib Saʿid (1) ibn Ahmad ibn Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-Barr ibn Mujahid, known as Ibn Zarqun (2), an Anṣārī of Andalusian origin from Seville, and a follower of the Mālikī school.

Abu ʿAbd Allah Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Khawlānī, the transmitter of the Muwaṭṭaʾ, granted him an authorization in 502 AH; he was born in that very year (3), and during his lifetime he was the sole narrator from al-Khawlānī.

In Marrakesh he received hadith from Abu ʿImrān Mūsā ibn Abi Talīd, becoming once again the only transmitter from him (4).

In Ceuta he studied under the judge ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad al-Waḥīdī.

He also heard from ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn ʿAydhūn (5), Khalaf ibn Yūsuf al-Abrash, and Qadi ʿIyāḍ ibn

(*) Ibn al-Abar devoted a notice to him in al-Takmila 2/540; al-Mundhiri in al-Takmila 1, entry 118; al-Dhahabi in Tarikh al-Islam, folio 128 (Ahmad III 2917/14), as well as in al-Ibar 4/258 and Duwal al-Islam 2/73; he is also cited in al-Ilam, folio 211; al-Safadi’s al-Wafi 3/102; Ibn al-Jazari’s Ghaya al-Nihaya 2/143; Ibn Taghribirdi’s al-Nujum 6/112; and he is mentioned in al-Dhahabi’s Tadhkirat al-Huffaz 4/1361. (1) Both manuscripts read “Saad,” which is erroneous; all the biographers, including al-Dhahabi in his various works, give the correct form “Said.” The mistake is undoubtedly the copyist’s. (2) Al-Mundhiri reports that “Zarqun is Said’s father’s nickname, given to him because of the deep redness of his complexion,” and the same point will reappear in the biography. (3) I.e., in the year 502/1108-9; he was born in Sharish during Rabi al-Awwal of that year. (4) As al-Mundhiri states in al-Takmila, Musa was the only person who heard directly from him. Ibn Bashkuwal records Musa’s death in 517/1123 in al-Sila 2/576. (5) The autograph has “Aydhun,” above which the copyist wrote “correct.” The more common form, however, is “Abdun” (with open ‘ayn, silent b, and damma on the d); “Aydhun” is rare and therefore treated in the specialists’ works on problematic names. Al-Dhahabi, for example, lists under “Aydhun” in al-Mushtabih (p. 434) only one person, the linguist Ibn al-Qali, Ismail b. al-Qasim b. Aydhun. And he also…
