Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi
  1. Al-Baqidari Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abi Ghalib ibn Ahmad*
The hadith scholar, ḥāfiẓ, and keen-minded authority: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abi Ghalib ibn Ahmad ibn Marzuq al-Baqidari, the Baghdadi, who was blind.
He came from the village of Baqidara (1).
He studied Qur’an recitation with several teachers, and he heard hadith from Sibṭ al-Khayyāṭ, Abu Bakr ibn al-Zāghūnī, Ibn Nāṣir, and many others.
Al-Dhubaythi (2) said: “Expert knowledge of hadith transmitters and the memorisation of their reports reached its pinnacle with him, and people relied on him. I heard more than one of our shaykhs describe him as outstanding in memorisation, the evaluation of narrators, and the texts themselves, despite his disability. It is said that Ibn Nāṣir would consult him on certain matters and defer to him.”
I add: He died while still in his prime, at the end of 575 AH. His daughter ʿAjība (3) lived to an advanced age, and the loftiest chains of transmission came to rest with her.
(*) Yaqut gives him an entry under “Baqadara” in Mu jam al-buldan, 1/474; Ibn al-Dubaythi mentions him in his History, fol. 153 (Shahid ‘Ali); al-Dhahabi in Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 58 (Ahmad III 2917/14); likewise Ibn Kathir in al-‘Ibar, 4/225; al-Dhahabi again in al-Mukhtasar al-muhtaj ilayh, 1/163; Ibn al-‘Imad in Shadharat, 4/252. He is also cited in the biography of his father Muhammad (d. 604 / 1207) in al-Takmila of al-Mundhiri, 3, no. 1019. (1) This vocalisation is the one found here, in al-Mukhtasar al-muhtaj ilayh copied by al-Dhahabi, and in ‘Abd al-‘Azim al-Mundhiri’s copy of Ibn al-Dubaythi’s History. In Yaqut’s Mu jam al-buldan and in the entry on his son Muhammad in al-Takmila the form is “Baqadara”. Yaqut specifies: qaf with kasra, an undotted dal, alif, and ra with fathah; it is the name of a village near Baghdad close to Awana. Ibn al-Dubaythi, al-Dhahabi and others, it seems, were satisfied with simply adding a fathah to the ra. (2) Dhayl Tarikh Madinat al-Salam, fol. 153 (Shahid ‘Ali). (3) ‘Ajiba died in 647 / 1249-50.
