His father and his overlord—the Sultan Ruslan Shah ibn Tughril ibn Muhammad ibn Malikshah—both died in the same year, 570 AH. Al-Bahlawan thereupon seized full authority, keeping with him on the throne Tughril ibn Ruslan Shah, the last surviving figurehead of the Seljuqs, who remained under Al-Bahlawan’s control. Tughril’s nominal reign lasted eleven years. Al-Bahlawan left at his death five thousand mamluks, some thirty thousand mounts, and wealth beyond reckoning. When he died, Tughril’s power grew, and he fought a pitched battle against Al-Bahlawan’s successor—his maternal half-brother Qizil (1)—whose rule endured for seven years.
Al-Bahlawan himself died in 581 AH.
- Abu al-Yusr Shakir ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Tanukhi*
The accomplished, eloquent courtier: Shakir ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Tanukhi, originally from Maʿarrat al-Nuʿman and later of Damascus, served as the confidential secretary of King Nur al-Din, ruler of Syria.
He studied literature under his grandfather, Abu al-Majd Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah, in Hama, and he heard and transmitted a few hadiths.
Those who narrated from him include the hadith master Ibn ʿAsakir, Abu al-Qasim ibn Sassara, and his son Ibrahim—the father of Shaykh Taqi al-Din ibn Abi al-Yusr.
He was born in Shayzar in 496 AH and lived eighty-five years.
