(1) The base manuscript and al-Dhahabi’s Tarikh al-Islam give the reading “and ʿAli b. Qirqin,” which is untenable, for the transmitter from Ibn Abi ʿAsrun was Mahmud b. ʿAli b. Qirqin; we have therefore inserted his first name. Zaki al-Din ʿAbd al-ʿAzim al-Mundhiri records under the obituaries of 632 AH in his Takmila: “In Shawwal the eminent amir Abu al-Thanāʾ Mahmud b. ʿAli b. Qirqin died in the city of Busra. He had heard hadith from the imam Abu Saʿd ʿAbd Allah b. Muhammad b. Abi ʿAsrun al-Shafiʿi and others, and he transmitted them” (Takmila, 6, no. 2615). Al-Dhahabi likewise notes, in his autograph copy of Tarikh al-Islam: “Mahmud b. ʿAli b. Mahmud b. Qirqin, the virtuous amir Shams al-Din Abu al-Thanāʾ, soldier and Qurʾan-reciter, born in Damascus in 564/1169; he heard from Abu Saʿd b. Abi ʿAsrun … and died in Shawwal at Busra” (folio 131 of Dr Bashshar’s photograph of Aya Sofya 3012). See also al-ʿIbar, 5/143, and al-Shadharat, 5/158. (2) Our teacher, the eminent Dr Mustafa Jawad, misread the name as “Qarqir” in al-Mukhtasar al-Muhtaj ilayh, 2/160, because he followed Ibn al-ʿImad’s Shadharat, 5/158. Al-Mundhiri explains the correct vocalisation: Qirqin—with an open qaf, a silent ra, then a qaf with kasra, followed by a ya and a final nun; al-Dhahabi confirms this spelling in his autograph Tarikh al-Islam (see the previous note).
