Hassan ibn Thabit said about the event:
“You slew the friend of God within the very walls of his own house,
committing a deed neither lawful nor rightly guided.
So may the right hands never prevail of those who joined together
to murder ʿUthman, the upright and divinely guided.”
Kaʿb ibn Malik recited:
“O men, a matter has roused in me a grief profound;
I marvel at those who weep over the traces of deserted camps.
I myself have seen the victim of the house, oppressed—
ʿUthman, carried toward the graves, wrapped in a shroud.”
And another poet said:
“By your father’s life—do not deny the fact:
Virtue has all but vanished.
People have acted foolishly in their religion
and have left Ibn ʿAffan to long-enduring harm.”
