in jurisprudence; legal verdicts revolved around him. Yet he was also distinguished by scrupulous piety, asceticism, and abundant worship.
61 – Abu al-Maḥāsin Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn Abī Shukr al-Isfahani*
He auditioned the entire al-Mujtabā of al-Nasāʾī from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥamd al-Dūnī, with the recitation of ʿAbd al-Jalīl Kutāh (1) in 499 AH. He likewise heard al-Ḥilya, the Mustakhraj ʿalā al-Ṣaḥīḥayn, and Tārīkh Iṣfahān (2) from Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād. In addition, he received al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3) from al-Mujassad (4) ibn Muḥammad al-Iskāf: “Ibn Fādshāh (5) related it to us; al-Ṭabarānī related it to him.”
He passed away in 583 AH.
= The Egyptian Shafi’i Qurʾan-reciter and preacher who died in 649; he will be mentioned later. For Ibn al-Jumayzi’s dating, see al-Dhahabi, al-Mushtabih, p. 176.
(*) Al-Dhahabi gives him a notice in Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 105 (Istanbul, Ahmed III 2917/14), and adds that Abu Rashid al-Ghazal is the one who recorded his date of death.
(1) Kutah is the nickname of ʿAbd al-Jalil b. Muhammad al-Isbahani; in Persian it means “short.” ʿAbd al-Jalil died in 553. Sources: al-Haji, al-Wafayat, entry 156; Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Muntazam, 10/182; al-Dhahabi, al-Ibar, 4/153. The author heard him in person, for he was born in 497, as he states in Tarikh al-Islam.

(3) By Abu al-Qasim Sulayman b. Ahmad al-Lakhmi al-Tabarani (d. 360).
(4) We read the word in this form; it is unvowelled here and likewise in Tarikh al-Islam. We have not identified it in the sources available to us and therefore reproduce it as is after looking for an approximate meaning. Al-Qamus explains: “a mujassad (or mujasad) garment is one dyed with saffron.”
(5) Abu al-Hasan Ahmad b. Muhammad b. al-Husayn al-Isbahani (d. 433) was one of the principal transmitters of al-Tabarani’s al-Muʿjam al-Kabir from him; see al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, fol. 331 (Aya Sofya 306) and al-Ibar, 3/178.
