Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Abbar (1) said: “He passed away in Murcia on the fourteenth of Safar in the year 584 AH, at the age of eighty, and the crush of people around his bier nearly caused some to perish.”
I add: Among those who received transmission from him were Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Lakhmi of Denia, Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hubbun of Egypt, ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Hasan al-Malaqi, Abu al-Khattab ibn Dihyah and his brother, the scholar Abu ʿAli al-Shalubayn, and a host of others.
Abu al-Rabiʿ al-Kalaʿi, in his work Shuyukh, said: “The judge, the scholar Ibn Hubaysh was the last of the hadith authorities in the Maghrib, universally acknowledged for his mastery of the rarities of hadith and of the Arabic tongue, along with firmness in religion (2). I met him in Murcia, took from him most of what he possessed, and read to him Sahih al-Bukhari, which he had heard from Ibn Mughith in the year (3) 530.”
He said (4): “I heard it from Abu ʿUmar Ibn al-Haddaʾ; ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Asad narrated to us in 395 AH; Ibn al-Sakan narrated to us in 343 AH; al-Farabri narrated from al-Bukhari. I also read to him the compilation of al-Nasaʾi with his own audition from Ibn Mughith. He said: I read it to the freedman of Ibn al-Tallaʿ, and Ibn al-Haddaʾ conveyed it to us: Abu Muhammad ibn Asad narrated to us; Hamzah al-Kinani informed us; al-Nasaʾi narrated to us.”
