- Ibn Shātil – ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghdādī
The eminent, long-lived musnid, Abū al-Fath ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Najā ibn Shātil al-Baghdādī, known as al-Dabbās.
He received ḥadith from his father, al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Busrī, Abū Ghālib al-Bāqillānī, Abū al-Ḥasan ibn al-ʿAllāf, Abū al-Qāsim al-Rabaʿī, Abū Saʿd ibn Khushaysh, Aḥmad ibn al-Muẓaffar ibn Sawsan, Abū ʿAlī ibn Nabḥān, Abū al-Ghanāʾim al-Narsī and several others.
He lived to a great age, was the sole transmitter of many reports, and people undertook journeys to hear from him (1).
A certificate of his audition, in the handwriting of Abū Bakr ibn Kāmil, has been found for the ḥadith of the Slander as transmitted by al-Ājurrī from Abū al-Khaṭṭāb ibn al-Baṭar in the year 491 AH, and he narrated it himself.
Either the date of that audition is incorrect, or he never actually heard the report—this is the more likely—or perhaps the name refers to a brother of his who bore the same name and died long ago.
Ibn al-Najjār said (2): “Most ḥadith scholars have declared his claim of hearing from Ibn al-Baṭar invalid, for he himself stated that he was born in 491 AH.”
Some, however, held that he was born in 489 AH.
The highest chains of transmission culminated with him.
