Abu Maʿshar al-Sindi stated: “He was killed on the eighteenth of Dhu al-Hijjah, a Friday.” Another transmitter added: “It occurred after the ʿAsr prayer, and he was buried in al-Baqiʿ between Maghrib and ʿIshaʾ, at the age of eighty-two, and this is the soundest report.”
Others say he lived to eighty-six.
ʿAbd Allah ibn Farukh reported: “I was present when he was buried; he was interred in the very garments he wore, still soaked in his blood, and he was not washed.” This was recorded by ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad in the Ziyadat al-Musnad. It is also said that Marwan led the funeral prayer over him and that he, too, did not have the body washed.
Al-Waqidi relates that Naʾilah came out with her tunic torn, crying aloud and carrying a lamp. Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim said to her, “Put out the lamp so no one notices us; I have seen the disorderly crowd.” They proceeded to al-Baqiʿ, where Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim led the funeral prayer, with Abu Juham ibn Ḥudhayfah and Niyar ibn Mukarram behind him, together with ʿUthman’s two wives, Naʾilah and Umm al-Banin. The two women indicated the spot in the grave; the men then went down, lined it, concealed it, and dispersed.
A report maintains that Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim prayed over him with only sixteen men in attendance, though the former account is better authenticated.
It is further narrated that Naʾilah bint al-Furafisah was celebrated for the beauty of her teeth. She broke her front teeth with a stone, declaring, “By Allah, no one will ever behold them after ʿUthman.” When she later arrived in Syria, Muʿawiyah proposed to her, but she declined.
